Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia 2010


Build Eco Xpo (BEX) Asia is a massive exhibition on Sustainable Buildings of Southeast Asia. The focus is on energy efficient building materials, design and architecture for a future of sustainable growth, and incorporation of critical elements into the construction industry, to enhance competitive advantage and knowledge of the ‘Build Green’ movement.

The Xpo will also serve as a platform to present and share knowledge and expertise on various green construction materials, and educate potential customers of the benefits of these products.

BEX Asia 2010

BEX Asia 2009 achieved great response with over 200 participating countries and 6400 visitors. Following this, the 3rd edition of BEX - BEX Asia 2010 is going to be held in Singapore from 13th to 15th September, 2010.

Event Highlights

The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) is going to partner with BEX Asia to organise a trade event with a strategic focus on bringing Green Buildings to the forefront of the industry needs.

SGBC is dedicated towards propelling the Singapore building and construction industry towards environmental sustainability by promoting green building design, practices and technologies, the integration of green building initiatives into mainstream design, construction and operation of buildings as well as building capability and professionalism to support wider adoption of green building development and practices in Singapore.

Willis Tower Skyscraper and the Glass Ledge


Willis Tower, formerly christened ‘Sears Tower’ is a centre of business and the tallest skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, United States. Chicago’s skyline owned Willis Tower as the world’s tallest building until the inauguration of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, U74AE. Currently it is on the second place among the world’s tallest buildings, is the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere and the tallest building in the United States.

Willis Tower has 108-storeys and stands at 1,450 feet (443 meters) - 1,730 feet (520 meters), which include the heights of twin antenna towers. The Tower offers 3.8 million square feet of space inside for retail and business purposes; and it cost more than $150 million to create this building.

Salient Features:

  • The structure is formed from 9 bundled square tubes, each 75 feet wide with no columns between the core and perimeter. Two of the tubes are 50 floors high, two are 66 floors, three are 90, and two are 108.
  • The construction with separate tubes provides lateral strengths to withstand the strong Chicago wind loads, as each tube only needs to take a part of the pressure.
  • Facades consist of 28-acres of black anodized aluminium panels and approximately 16,100 bronze-tinted windows.
  • Six roof-mounted robotic window washing machines are used to clean all 16,100 windows.
  • The tower has a pressure lock at the freight entrance to combat the 'stack effect' generated by the differential in air pressure caused by cold air meeting warm air in the building.
  • Includes world's fastest observatory elevators at 1600 feet per minute.
  • Solar panels on the 90th floor roof of this tower are used to heat water for restrooms.
  • Smart lighting systems installed here will automatically dim when enough sunlight is available inside.
  • Includes 25,000 miles (40,223 kilometres) of electrical cable and approximately 43,000 miles (69,200 kilometres) of telephone cables.

Skydeck

The most attractive feature of the Willis Tower is the observation deck, or the “Skydeck”, which is 1,353 feet (412 meters) high above the ground. The Skydeck occupies the 103rd floor, the highest non-mechanical floor in the building. It has its own entrance on Jackson Boulevard, and attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors per year.

Skydeck offers the best views of Chicago and it is possible to see four states - Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin, as the range of view is 40 - 50 miles (65 - 80 kilometres) from here.

Another attraction at the Skydeck is 'the Ledge', a glass balcony extending 4.3 ft from where one can look straight down. The glass balcony is 10ft high and 10ft wide, and can hold five tons of weight with its 1.5 inches-thick glass. The transparent walls, floor and ceiling leave visitors with a feeling of floating in air.

Each glass box is comprised of three layers of glass laminated into one seamless unit. The low-iron, clear glass is fully tempered and heat-soaked for durability. In addition, the motorized system that projects and retracts the boxes from the building utilizes steel Linear Beams.

This Skydeck is cold, almost icy to the touch and gives a rather eerie feeling when looked at!

Energy Efficient Meyer Hospital with Green Roofing



A quarter established for medical treatment of illnesses, a hospital setting calls for an environment of comfort, health and warmth. And Meyer Hospital, a paediatric hospital in Florence, Italy is furnishing its patients with all of this and much more. Recently, this hospital upgraded a wing to a “green” and “sustainable” one, the intent being to provide an environment conducive to recovery whilst consuming minimum energy and natural resources.

Meyer Hospital houses 3 wings. The east wing hosts the university and research unit; the west wing, the outpatient facilities; and a central block houses the administrative department. The main entrance of the hospital leads to a glazed passageway to a ‘healing garden’, which further leads to the spacious upper atrium. The upper atrium features a play area for children that open towards a green roof.

The upper glass of the atrium is embedded with solar electric panels to generate energy and offset glare. The glass roof is installed with 47 solar tubes, which permits natural light to enter the building. These tubes lend an appearance of several ‘Pinocchio Hats’ lining the roof of the building. The green roof acts as an insulation cover, lowering the temperature inside the hospital greatly.

The building’s walls are covered with 6 cm of thermally insulating materials. This is expected to reduce 12% of the energy used annually for heating. Wooden-frame windows are incorporated in the building. Patient rooms are protected from direct sunlight by an overhanging sunshade. To reduce the visual impact of the building in the park, the shading system is covered externally with copper-plates and internally with wood.

Two high-efficiency condensing gas boilers and radiant floor panels have been installed for supply space heating. Radiant floors help reach a thermal comfort level at a low cost. Two electrical chillers have been installed for cooling purposes. A third chiller is also installed, which generates heat for domestic hot water.

Greenhouse

A bio-climatic entrance hall called the ‘Serra’ (greenhouse) which has been built surrounding the hospital building acts as the public face of the hospital. This curved triple-height space, attached to the central wing of the villa, is an innovative and sustainable atrium. This greenhouse is shaded by internal white blinds adjustable through an automatic control system. A 31 kWp of glass/glass Photovoltaic system installed at the greenhouse provides the opportunity of combining energy production with other functions of the building envelope such as shading, weather shielding and heat production.

Energy Efficient Solar Panels

The energy from the rays of the sun that can be converted to usable heat and electricity is referred to as solar energy. Solar energy is power derived from the rays of the sun. It is considered to be one, if not the most, environmentally friendly source of energy that can be used on earth. This solar energy can be converted into some other forms of energy and can be used for various applications. Solar panels harvest sunlight and actively convert it to electricity.Using solar panels is a great way to generate clean and renewable electricity from solar energy to power remote appliances, or even the average home. Having a solar panel energy system can be a great thing because it will allow you to save money on your energy costs. It can be very expensive to heat or cool your house so having a way to use the sun's energy can be very beneficial. Most of the things about using solar energy are positive except in some cases the cost can be expensive. Solar energy is used to reduce global warming at the same time saves lots of money.

Residential solar panels

Residential solar panels continue to be one of the largest trends in green building and energy conservation. Solar panels are quickly becoming one of the most affordable ways to lower utility costs for the homeowner.

Homes connected to the utility electrical grid are known as grid-tied homes or on-the-grid systems, while off-grid homes rely on batteries and need to be a safe distance from power lines. Most homeowners choose to work on the grid due to the added security from the utility company.
Residential solar energy systems still function on cloudy days by drawing upon backup electricity from the utility company (for on-the-grid systems), and the same is true during night hours. For off-the-grid systems, the panels are usually connected to a battery storage system as the backup power source and will extract energy if there is a deficiency that day.

Solar Cells

Solar panels are made up of number of solar cells. Solar Cells, or photovoltaic cells, are arranged in a grid-like pattern on the surface of the solar panel. These solar voltaic cells collect sunlight during the daylight hours and covert it into electricity. Sometimes the term solar cell is reserved for devices intended specifically to capture energy from sunlight, while the term photovoltaic cell is used when the light source is unspecified. The field of research related to solar cells is known as photo voltaic.

Solar electric panels contain many photovoltaic cells electrically connected and packaged behind glass for mechanical protection and electrical insulation. The modules are usually connected together in an array and with other components such as a mounting frame and an electrical inverter (for on grid) or a charge controller and batteries (for off grid).

In addition to solar panels, a photovoltaic (PV) system requires a mounting structure to tilt panels toward the sun, an inverter to convert panel-generated direct current (DC) into appliance-friendly alternating current (AC), battery storage to compensate for unfavourable weather conditions, and a charge controller to regulate battery operation.

Two Forms of solar cells

There are two main forms of solar cells in existence today, and these are; "solar electricity panels" and "solar hot water panels". The two different technologies allow us to either generate electricity for our homes or to heat the water we use.

The combination of a solar hot water panel with other renewable energy technologies, such as solar panels, or a home wind turbine can work quite well together in providing a source of cheap, clean, and renewable energy for our homes.

Solar Panel

Solar panels consist of modules that contain solar cells and convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter within the panel converts the DC power into alternating current (AC) electricity that is used to heat and cool the home, and also operate any home appliance or device.

Solar Panels are a form of active solar power. The term solar panel is used to describe two completely different technologies, both of which generate energy from sunlight, and both of which are packaged in the form of panels:

  • a photovoltaic module is used to generate electricity

  • a solar thermal collector is used to generate heat (generally hot water)

Solar panels are typically constructed with crystalline silicon, which is used in other industries (such as the microprocessor industry), and the more expensive gallium arsenide, which is produced exclusively for use in photovoltaic (solar) cells.

Other, more efficient solar panels are assembled by depositing amorphous silicon alloy in a continuous roll-to-roll process. The solar cells created from this process are called Amorphous Silicon Solar Cells, or A-si. Solar Panels constructed using amorphous silicon technology is more durable, efficient, and thinner than their crystalline counterparts

For very important solar projects, such as space probes that have to rely on solar energy, very-high efficiency solar cells are constructed from gallium arsenide by a process called molecular beam epitaxy. Solar cells constructed by this process have several p-n junction diodes, each designed to be maximally efficient at absorbing a given part of the solar spectrum. These solar panels are much more efficient than conventional types, but the process and materials involved make them far too expensive for everyday applications.

The newest solar panels function on the molecular or quantum level, and represent an exciting new technology coming into play. These solar panels are created by implanting carbon nanotubes or quantum dots into a treated plastic. Unlike silicon-based solar panels, these solar panels do not have to be constructed in a clean room, and therefore production costs are somewhat diminished.

Power production

In direct sunlight at the surface of the equator, a maximally efficient photovoltaic cell about 1/5m in diameter creates a current of approximately 2 amps at 2 volts, however, due to the Earth's atmospheric interference, terran solar panels will never perform as well as solar panels exposed directly to the sun's rays.

Solar hot water panel

Solar hot water panels are a means to harness the sun's energy in a unique way. Like traditional solar panels, solar hot water panels are placed in direct sunlight, oftentimes arrayed on rooftops. A solar hot water array often referred to as a solar hot water heater, uses the energy from the sun to heat a fluid, which is in turn used to move heat generated in the array to a heat storage vessel. The process starts by heating a body of sanitized water and storing it in a hot water cylinder. Next, solar hot water panels would be installed on the rooftop, each with a darkly-coated absorber plate complete with water circulation tubes.

The tubes carry the heated water from the solar water heater to a place where it can be used or stored. A heat exchanger released heat and circulates the cooled water back to the solar hot water array to be reheated. This cycle of heating, energy utilization, and cooling is begun anew with each sunrise and lasts throughout the day for the effective life of the solar hot water heater. These arrays are especially useful for businesses that utilize large quantities of hot water, such as the pictured Laundromat.

Solar hot water heaters are composed of a several hot water panel units, and can be fully automated systems.
